Surgery For Two Children This Month

The Peekskill Rotary Club sponsored two children to have heart surgery through Gift of Life, Diego (pictured with his mother) and Derick.

What started as a fundraising project by Peekskill Rotarian Lisa Montalto to bring one child to the United States for cardiac treatment through Gift of Life, turned into two kids operated on in their own country. After the COVID-19 crisis, it became impossible to bring a child from another country to New York for their heart surgery. Instead Lisa agreed to put the money she raised, combined with funds from the Peekskill Rotary to put towards surgery for two children. Both children received heart surgery in El Salvador and are reportedly doing well.

The Gift of Life International organization provides hope to children with heart disease and their families, empowers doctors and nurses to treat children in their country of birth, build sustainable pediatric cardiac programs in emerging countries and expand our global reach through partnerships with like-minded organizations, maximizing their impact.
